Mothers Day picnic was a success

The Association of Romanians in New England, along with Romani in Boston (Facebook) and Romanian Moms (Yahoo) co-organized a Romanian picnic in Arnold Arboretum Sunday May 8, 2011.

The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University is the oldest public arboretum in North America and one of the world’s leading centers for the study of plants. Of the thousands of flowering plants in the Arboretum, only one, the lilac, is singled out each year for a daylong celebration on Mothers’ Day. Tours of the lilacs, dance performances, picnicking (allowed on this special day only), and family activities make for a memorable day.

Despite the rather unstable weather, we managed to gather in the park, the flowers and the company of older or newer friends making it worthwhile. We enjoyed delicious food, joyful or serious conversations, playful children, all right under a Carpathian birch tree and the scents of thousands of lilac flowers.

A team of volunteers collecting DNA samples and enrolling bone marrow donors for Mihaela Serban were also present at the picnic. Many thanks to those who kindly registered. The online donor drive continues at www.match4mihaela.org.

We would like to thank all the participants for coming and hopefully more people we’ll join us on this event next year or on other AR-NE events planned for this year.
